Adapted from Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel of the same name, “Passing” stars Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga as childhood friends who reconnect in 1920s New York City. Rebecca Hall’s feature directorial debut, “Passing,” was one of the best dramas to debut at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. Variety’s Peter Debruge hailed “The Lost Daughter” as a “brilliant but risky thriller” in his review, adding, “In this remarkable directorial debut, Maggie Gyllenhaal challenges conventional thinking about motherhood, delivering her most subversive ideas as subtext.” The drama is nominated for four Independent Spirit Awards, including best feature and best director. “The Lost Daughter” swept the Gotham Awards with four prizes (including best feature) and was named the year’s best first film by the New York Film Critics Circle. Observing the mother triggers memories of Leda’s past and her own relationship to motherhood. Oscar winner Olivia Colman stars as Leda Caruso, a middle-aged college professor whose restful vacation in Greece is consumed by her interest in an exasperated mother (Dakota Johnson) and her young daughter. Maggie Gyllenhaal won the screenplay prize at the 2021 Venice Film Festival for her feature directorial debut, “The Lost Daughter,” adapted from the Elena Ferrante novel of the same name.
